Magdelena E. Powelson, 96, of Evansville, passed away on the morning of Saturday, May 13, 2017, at Oasis Care Center of Evansville. She was born January 5, 1921, in Evansville, IN, daughter of Herman and Anna Hartig.

She received her Registered Nursing Degree in 1942 from Deaconess School of Nursing. In May of 1944, she enlisted in the Navy Corp of Nurses with the rank of Second Lieutenant and treated wounded soldiers. Upon leaving the service she worked at Deaconess Hospital, raised her family, then worked over 23 years at Visiting Nurse Association....

Magdelena E. Powelson, 96, of Evansville, passed away on the morning of Saturday, May 13, 2017, at Oasis Care Center of Evansville. She was born January 5, 1921, in Evansville, IN, daughter of Herman and Anna Hartig.

She received her Registered Nursing Degree in 1942 from Deaconess School of Nursing. In May of 1944, she enlisted in the Navy Corp of Nurses with the rank of Second Lieutenant and treated wounded soldiers. Upon leaving the service she worked at Deaconess Hospital, raised her family, then worked over 23 years at Visiting Nurse Association. She married Charles Woodrow Powelson on January 7, 1950, at St. Paul Evangelical and Reform Church of German Township. They made their life together for 43 years until his death on July 23, 1993. Maggie enjoyed crafting, sewing, gardening, attending Club 53, being Cub Scout Den Mother, traveling, and teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.

Maggie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles; grandson, Nicholas Powelson; and siblings Herb Hartig, Alvina Burgess, Julius Hartig, and Oscar Hartig.

She is survived by her children, Saundra K. Lange and her husband Mark, of Vincennes, Beth Ann Curless and her husband Rick, of Haysville, Kansas, Kent H. Powelson and his wife Margie, of Evansville; grandchildren Charity Ohlund, Christina Schlag, Angie Salmon, Jonathan Lange, Aaron Lange, Charles Robert Curless; and great- grandchildren Maddux, Nash, Tyler, Sophia, Isabella, Caleb, Adelynn, Olivia, Anna, Landon, and Lexi. She is also survived by her sister, Emma Geiser; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend their gratitude and thanks to the staff of Oasis Dementia Care Center for the kindness, care and support of our mother. She thought of Oasis as her home and the staff made that happen.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, May 19, 2017, at St. Paul's German Township UCC, officiated by Pastor Lynn Marino, with burial beside her husband in the church cemetery. Friends may visit Friday from 9:00 AM until service time at the church.
